Science Communications Officer

About the role

The VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology is looking for a Science Communications Officer in Ghent. The role combines 80% work at the Plant Systems Biology center and 20% at the Center for Medical Biotechnology, bringing the scientific discoveries, technological innovations and societal impact of both centers to diverse audiences through various communication channels. It also involves organizing and coordinating scientific, networking and outreach events. The officer is part of the VIB Communications team and reports to the VIB Communications Director at HQ.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a national and international strategic communication plan for the Plant Systems Biology center and support the visibility of the Medical Biotechnology center through content creation, stakeholder engagement and internal communications.
• Liaise with scientists on their latest findings and turn them into high-quality content for international audiences.
• Produce written and visual content for websites, online media and social media (Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube).
• Write press releases, advise PIs on newsworthy topics and work with the HQ team on news angles; media relations are handled by HQ.
• Improve presentations and communication materials.
• Organize and coordinate events such as the yearly Plant Systems Biology Symposium and the biennial Medical Biotechnology retreat.
• Support and report on internal community initiatives and maintain relationships with local, national and international stakeholders.
• Help shape the VIB Communications strategy, contribute to central stories, campaigns and newsletters, and take part in team meetings and trainings.

Required profile

• Master's degree in life sciences or a related discipline, with the ability to grasp and communicate complex scientific content.
• Familiarity with plant biology, biomedical research or both is a strong advantage.
• Passion for science and life sciences; proven expertise in strategic science communication.
• Experience in a similar role, especially with an international focus, is a significant asset.
• Excellent verbal, written and diplomatic English; knowledge of Dutch is a plus.
• Team player able to take initiative and work independently in a fast-paced environment, with a willingness to build a strong onsite presence.
