Communications Officer – Life Sciences

About the role

The VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research (IRC) in Ghent is looking for a Communications Officer with a passion for life sciences and science communication. The role acts as the communication link between the Center and the VIB headquarters Communications team, working closely with scientists and Principal Investigators to turn research into engaging stories and strengthen the Center's visibility.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the Center's communication activities in line with VIB's communication strategy.
• Contribute to VIB-wide communication projects, campaigns and stories.
• Identify impactful stories with scientists and Principal Investigators and work with the HQ Communications team to maximise their visibility.
• Translate scientific discoveries and achievements into clear, engaging content for a wide range of audiences.
• Create and manage content for digital channels such as the website, social media, newsletters and press materials.
• Support scientific events, outreach activities and stakeholder engagement.

Required profile

• Genuine interest in life sciences and confidence engaging with researchers and scientific topics.
• Ability to build trusted relationships with scientists, colleagues and external stakeholders.
• Collaborative attitude and enthusiasm for a diverse, international environment.
• Proactive, flexible and solution-oriented mindset.
• Master's degree and at least 2-3 years of work experience; a life sciences background is an asset.

Required skills

• Dutch and English, written and spoken.
• Strong storytelling and the ability to simplify complex scientific information.
• Organizational and project management skills, handling multiple priorities.
• Experience with content creation, digital communication and social media.
