Organic Chemistry Researcher – Hydrogen Bond Measurements

About the role

Ghent University seeks a researcher to synthesize, purify and characterize sugar derivatives and to measure their hydrogen‑bond donating capacity using the IR‑based pKAHY methodology. The role involves independent laboratory work and detailed reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Synthesize, purify and characterize a series of sugar derivatives.
• Measure hydrogen‑bond donating capacity with the pKAHY method and analyse IR spectra.
• Compile comprehensive reports for each task.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in chemistry or equivalent.
• Strong experience in organic synthesis, especially carbohydrate chemistry.
• Good knowledge of laboratory health and safety.
• Ability to travel independently to Nantes University, France for measurements.

Required skills

• Organic synthesis and purification (chromatography, HPLC).
• Qualitative and quantitative analysis using LC‑MS, NMR, IR spectroscopy.
• Determination of hydrogen‑bond donating capacity via the pKAHY method.
• Software proficiency: Topspin, ChemDraw, SciFinder, Opus, Microsoft Office.
