Computational Linguist

About the role

The Computational Linguist will support NATO’s Council Secretariat by developing and managing AI‑based linguistic technologies. Working within the Linguistic Tools and Resources Management Unit, the incumbent will ensure that linguistic data and machine translation solutions meet NATO’s quality standards and operational needs.

Key responsibilities

• Advise senior linguistic leaders on the selection, deployment and optimisation of IT tools for linguistic services.
• Continuously adapt AI‑driven Machine Translation solutions using multilingual data and feedback from linguists.
• Monitor developments in Neural Machine Translation, Large Language Models and related AI technologies.
• Establish and maintain best‑practice procedures for linguistic data lifecycle management.
• Provide training and support to headquarters staff on new linguistic tools.
• Coordinate design, set‑up and administration of linguistic technology projects with relevant NATO entities.

Required profile

• University degree in translation or a related discipline with proven translation capability.
• Minimum three years of experience managing database‑supported tools and processes.
• Hands‑on experience with computer‑assisted translation (CAT) software and AI‑based machine translation implementation.
• Advanced proficiency (Level V) in both English and French, NATO official languages.
• Flexibility to work outside normal hours when workload demands.
