China Policy Officer

About the role

The China Policy Officer will support NATO’s Political Affairs and Security Policy Division in shaping and implementing policy towards China and its Indo‑Pacific partners. Based in Brussels, the officer will work closely with NATO leadership, allies, and external stakeholders to ensure coherent and forward‑looking policy guidance.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, analyse and report on political, security and defence developments related to China and assess implications for NATO.
• Provide policy advice to NATO senior leadership and contribute to the work of the North Atlantic Council and relevant committees.
• Coordinate NATO’s China policy with internal departments, the NATO Command Structure and external partners.
• Develop and maintain a network of contacts across allied governments, partner countries, international organisations, academia and NGOs.
• Prepare, draft and edit policy documents, memoranda, press statements, speaking notes and background material.
• Act as a back‑up officer for other Indo‑Pacific Section countries as required.

Required profile

• University degree in political science, international relations, security studies or a related field.
• Minimum of four years experience in diplomatic missions, policy writing or security‑defence work involving China.
• Strong knowledge of Euro‑Atlantic and Indo‑Pacific security issues.
• Advanced proficiency (V) in either English or French and beginner (I) in the other language.
• Excellent drafting and communication abilities.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of Mandarin (advantageous).
• Experience with Indo‑Pacific partner countries (advantageous).
