Software Engineer – Proton Therapy Systems

About the role

As a member of the R&D Engineering Beam team, you will design, implement, test and document software that controls a proton therapy system, ensuring safe and accurate dose delivery to cancer patients. You will work on the data exchange between devices and hardware subsystems while supporting clinical and service workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement software solutions based on functional specifications.
• Develop high‑quality, maintainable and testable code following IBA R&D standards.
• Perform unit testing, automated integration testing in a factory environment, and on‑site testing at proton therapy centers.
• Investigate and fix bugs, analyse root causes and refactor code to improve robustness, performance and user experience.
• Apply agile development practices within a regulated medical‑device environment, complying with defined processes and quality requirements.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of the codebase, development environment and engineering practices.
• Collaborate closely with electro‑mechanical, physics, system and verification engineers.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Professional software development experience with solid programming fundamentals.
• Strong interest in quality‑driven development, testing and CI/CD practices.
• Ability to navigate a large, complex codebase with multiple interactions.
• Good knowledge of Linux‑based development environments.
• Excellent English communication skills and a collaborative, proactive attitude.
