Researcher in Cryptography

About the role

The Royal Military Academy (RMA) seeks a full‑time researcher to join its Department of Mathematics and contribute to the Belgian extension of the INT‑UQKD project, an ESA ARTES programme on quantum key distribution. The role focuses on classical (quantum‑safe) cryptography and hybrid solutions that combine QKD with post‑quantum cryptography, supporting secure communications for defence and other critical sectors.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct scientific research on classical and post‑quantum cryptographic primitives related to QKD.
• Develop and evaluate hybrid cryptographic schemes that integrate QKD and post‑quantum algorithms.
• Collaborate with the RMA cryptography group, Belgian Defence partners, and international academic/industrial partners.
• Stay up‑to‑date with the latest developments in cryptography and quantum communications.
• Contribute to project deliverables, standards analysis, and best‑practice documentation.
• Potentially continue within the group after the project, e.g., by pursuing a PhD.

Required profile

• Master’s or PhD degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, cryptography or a closely related field.
• Strong interest in quantum‑safe cryptography and secure communication technologies.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, defence‑oriented research environment.

Required skills

• Post‑quantum cryptography.
• Quantum key distribution (QKD).
• Classical (quantum‑safe) cryptographic algorithms.
• Design and analysis of hybrid cryptographic schemes.

What we offer

• Opportunity to work on a high‑impact European research project.
• Collaboration with leading academic and industrial partners.
• Potential pathway to a PhD or long‑term research position.
