Research Manager – Geomatics for Environmental Science & Policy

About the role

The Spatial Applications Division Leuven (SADL) at KU Leuven seeks a dynamic Research Manager to lead cutting‑edge projects at the intersection of geomatics, environmental science and policy. You will shape research programmes, secure funding and guide a multidisciplinary team working on land, soil, water, biodiversity and climate challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Lead acquisition of regional, national, EU and international research and consultancy funding in geomatics, GIS, Earth Observation, spatial data science and AI.
• Build, coordinate and manage a portfolio of research and consultancy projects, ensuring high‑quality scientific delivery.
• Provide scientific leadership by coaching PhD students, junior researchers and staff, fostering collaboration across KU Leuven and external partners.
• Develop and maintain networks with public authorities, European Commission directorates, the World Bank and other international organisations.
• Contribute to digital skills strategies for the geospatial sector and engage in academic and vocational training initiatives.
• Disseminate results through publications, conference presentations and participation in professional bodies and policy networks.

Required profile

• Proven track record in obtaining research funding in the geospatial or environmental domain.
• Experience managing multi‑disciplinary research projects at national or international level.
• Strong leadership and mentoring abilities, with experience supervising PhD candidates.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to build strategic partnerships.
