ICT Data Engineer (Dutch Required)

About the role

VIB, a Flemish non-profit research institute focused on life sciences, is looking for an ICT Data Engineer for its headquarters in Ghent. The role turns data from different business systems and sources into reliable, reusable data solutions that support reporting, analytics and data-driven decisions. It sits under the Data Analytics and Reporting Architect and works with business analysts, reporting specialists and application teams.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and optimize scalable data pipelines and transformations on the institutional data platform
• Build integrations that bring data from applications and systems into the data platform
• Develop data models for analytical consumption, applying data warehouse and lakehouse principles
• Build reusable data products for reporting and analytics use cases
• Write and maintain code where appropriate, using standard platform capabilities
• Troubleshoot pipelines, transformations and data products
• Build data quality in through validation, testing, monitoring and error handling
• Apply version control, automated deployment, testing, documentation and reusable components
• Take ownership of implementation and quality, from requirements to deployment and continuous improvement
• Collaborate with business analysts and reporting specialists and share technical knowledge

Required profile

• Several years of experience in data engineering or a closely related technical data role
• Bachelor's or master's degree, or equivalent through experience
• Fluent written and spoken Dutch and English
• Pragmatic approach to maintainable, reusable solutions and ability to collaborate across domains

Required skills

• Solid experience with data pipelines, transformations and data models
• Understanding of data warehouses and/or lakehouses
• Strong SQL skills with large and complex datasets
• End-to-end understanding of data solutions
• Assets: Microsoft Fabric, Python or PySpark, Git, CI/CD, automated testing, Power BI, data quality, lineage and monitoring, data governance and security
