Head, Strategic Communications

About the role

The NATO Representation to Ukraine (NRU) seeks a senior communications professional to lead its Strategic Communications team. Based in Kyiv, the incumbent will shape NATO’s public narrative in Ukraine, advise senior representatives, and work closely with Ukrainian authorities and NATO Headquarters.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of communicators to promote NRU activities and NATO programmes.
• Advise the Senior and Deputy Senior NATO Representatives on strategic communication matters.
• Coordinate with the Office of Strategic Communications at NATO HQ and Ukrainian government counterparts.
• Design and implement capacity‑building programmes and joint communications campaigns for Ukrainian authorities.
• Analyse information‑environment needs, develop counter‑information initiatives, and support NATO’s deterrence messaging.
• Manage people performance, act as a role model, and ensure compliance with security protocols for an extreme‑risk location.

Required profile

• University degree in social sciences, international relations, strategic communications or a related field.
• Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 3 years in a managerial role.
• Proven experience in media and digital outreach, communications campaigns, and information‑environment assessment.
• Strong knowledge of international affairs, security and defence policies.
• Advanced proficiency (NATO level V) in English or French and beginner level (NATO I) in the other language.
• Experience with Ukraine or the region, senior‑level stakeholder engagement, and Ukrainian language skills are advantageous.
