Software Engineer III, Embedded Systems/Firmware

About the role

Google is seeking a Software Engineer III to develop firmware and ROM code for custom security chips and embedded systems. You will work on critical projects within the Platforms and Devices team, contributing to secure, high‑performance products used by billions of users worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Write product or system development code for embedded platforms.
• Participate in or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders.
• Review code from other developers, ensuring style, testability, efficiency and security best practices.
• Contribute to documentation and educational content, updating it as products evolve.
• Triage product or system issues, debug, track and resolve problems affecting hardware, network, or service operations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 2+ years of software development experience, including work with embedded operating systems.
• Experience programming Read‑Only Memory (ROM) and implementing or testing cryptographic algorithms.
• Proficiency in Rust programming.
• Preferred: Master’s or PhD in Computer Science or related field, strong data‑structures and algorithms knowledge, experience developing accessible technologies, and ability to support security certification efforts.
