Scientific Researcher – InP Quantum Dots
Ghent University · Ghent
Job description
About the role
Ghent University, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Chemistry (WE06), is looking for a scientific researcher for a 6-month contract of limited duration, starting no earlier than 16 November 2026. The project focuses on the synthesis and characterisation of indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots, investigating how synthesis parameters and reaction chemistry affect composition, size and optoelectronic properties, and assessing their potential for visible and near-infrared applications.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, perform and optimise colloidal InP quantum dot syntheses using hot-injection methods under inert-gas conditions.
- Study how synthesis parameters and reaction chemistry influence composition, size, optical properties and reproducibility.
- Characterise the materials with spectroscopic and analytical techniques, with emphasis on visible and near-infrared spectroscopy.
- Evaluate the quantum dots for optoelectronic applications, including integration into thin films and photodetector devices.
- Process and interpret data, document results and present findings in reports and project meetings.
- Contribute to experimental evidence and proof-of-concept demonstrations that may support future patents and intellectual property.
Required profile
- Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanoscience, Physics, Chemical Engineering or a related field; PhD also accepted.
- Practical experience in colloidal nanomaterial synthesis, preferably with hot-injection methods.
- Experience with air- and moisture-sensitive chemistry and handling of chemical precursors under inert-gas conditions.
- Good written and spoken English for scientific communication and international collaboration.
Required skills
- Sound understanding of nanomaterial chemistry and the link between synthesis conditions, structure and optoelectronic properties.
- Experience with optical spectroscopy, preferably in the near-infrared range.
- Ability to plan experiments, analyse data, troubleshoot procedures and work independently.
- Experience with III-V semiconductor quantum dots (InP or related indium-based materials) is highly desirable; thin-film fabrication and optoelectronic device characterisation is an advantage.
What we offer
- Remuneration on wage scale WM1 to WM4 (Master's) or PD1 to PD4 (doctorate).
- Training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave per year, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
Applications are made online through the university's e-recruitment system, with CV, cover letter, diploma and reference letter, before the deadline.
