Deputy Head of Operations (Volunteer, Remote)

About the role

The Tessera Institute for Global Affairs is seeking a volunteer Deputy Head of Operations to ensure the smooth functioning of its growing research institute. This remote, self‑directed position works closely with the Head of Operations and the Executive Director to translate strategic priorities into effective processes.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day operations of a ~10‑person volunteer team covering marketing, social media, strategic communications, and human resources.
• Provide strategic guidance and support to maintain operational health aligned with the Institute’s mission.
• Collaborate with the Head of Operations to develop clear processes, expectations, and workflows.
• Coordinate between operational teams and research/editorial staff to ensure alignment.
• Identify operational gaps early and implement improvements to systems, workflows, and team culture.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of volunteers.

Required profile

• Mid‑career experience (5+ years) in operations or management, preferably within a think‑tank, research institute, university, or similar environment.
• Proven track record of leading or coordinating distributed or volunteer teams.
• Strong organizational judgment and people‑management abilities.
• Interest in or alignment with the Institute’s focus on global affairs and security.
