Computer Vision Engineer – Plant Systems Biology

About the role

We are seeking a Computer Vision Engineer to join the VIB‑UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology in Ghent. You will work closely with plant scientists and computational biologists to develop state‑of‑the‑art computer‑vision and deep‑learning solutions for extracting quantitative information from diverse biological imaging data.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze image‑based plant phenotyping datasets, including RGB and hyperspectral data.
• Design and optimise data‑analysis workflows for automated imaging platforms.
• Map data from multiple imaging sensors into a shared domain (sensor fusion).
• Develop quantitative methods for microscopy image analysis.
• Deploy automated image‑analysis pipelines that are accessible to non‑expert users.
• Integrate agentic AI where beneficial within data‑analysis pipelines.
• Contribute to scientific publications describing computer‑vision innovations and resulting biological discoveries.

Required profile

• PhD in engineering, computer science, mathematics or a related field.
• Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in computer vision.
• Strong background in machine learning and AI.
• Proficiency in Python and Git with high standards for software quality, verification, documentation and user‑friendliness.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to take ownership of complex technical topics.
• Interest in plant science and molecular biology.
• Fluent English (spoken and written) and ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively.
