Scientific Researcher – Luminescence Thermometry
Ghent University · Ghent
Job description
About the role
Ghent University, Faculty of Sciences, Department of Chemistry (WE06 - Chemie), is looking for a Scientific Researcher for an 18-month contract of limited duration in the NanoSensing Group led by Prof. Anna Kaczmarek. The project develops a temperature-monitoring technology for medical laser procedures, combining temperature-sensitive luminescent nanoparticles with fiber-optic sensing so that heat generated during treatments can be monitored in real time at the treatment site. The work is done in close collaboration with Prof. Thomas Tailly (Urology, Ghent University Hospital) and emphasizes technology maturation and proof of concept.
Key responsibilities
- Perform, optimise and upscale the synthesis of nanosized luminescence thermometers
- Characterise the materials with spectroscopic and analytical techniques, with emphasis on optical spectroscopy
- Build an optical-fiber-based platform for thermal measurements
- Carry out ex vivo tests of the thermometers in porcine kidney
- Process and interpret data, document results and present findings in reports and project meetings
- Contribute to experimental evidence and proof-of-concept demonstrations that may support future patents and intellectual property
Required profile
- Master's or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanoscience, Bioengineering, Physics or a related field
- Practical experience in nanomaterial synthesis
- Good written and spoken English for scientific communication and international collaboration
- Experience with luminescence thermometry is highly desirable; experience with optical fibers and biologically mimicked systems is an advantage
Required skills
- Nanomaterial chemistry and understanding of how synthesis conditions affect structure and optoelectronic properties
- Understanding of nanomaterials for medical applications
- Optical spectroscopy, including the near-infrared range
- Ability to plan experiments, analyse data, troubleshoot syntheses and work independently
What we offer
- 18-month contract of definite duration, renewable, starting on 1 January 2027 at the earliest
- Remuneration on wage scale WM1 to WM4 (Master's) or PD1 to PD4 (doctorate)
- Training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave per year, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers
Applications are made online through the university's e-recruitment system by the stated deadline, with a CV and academic transcript, a cover letter and a diploma transcript.
