Optical Payload Architect

About the role

AMOS, a specialist in ultra‑high opto‑mechanical systems for the space industry, is seeking an Optical Payload Architect to lead the design of Very High Resolution (VHR) optical payloads for Earth observation satellites.

Key responsibilities

• Define the overall payload architecture, including telescope configuration, mirror substrates, mounts, thermal design and focal plane layout.
• Establish opto‑mechanical design principles such as isostatic mounts, athermalisation, dimensional stability under launch and thermal loads.
• Explore design trade‑offs in concept phases, formalise budgets (MTF, wavefront error, LOS stability) and ensure compliance with platform constraints.
• Act as design authority during development, arbitrate architectural changes and mentor the payload engineering team.
• Lead technical content of proposals and defend the architecture to customers.

Required profile

• Master’s or PhD in Physics, Aerospace, Optical or Electromechanical Engineering.
• At least 10 years of experience in space optical instruments, with responsibility for definition phases of at least one instrument.
• Strong opto‑mechanical background with experience in SiC, Zerodur, ULE mirrors, lightweighting, isostatic mounts, flexures, bonding, CFRP or Invar structures.
• Familiarity with system engineering practices and ECSS standards.
• Fluent English; French is an asset.

Required skills

• Matlab and Python programming.
• Zemax / OpticStudio optical design tools.
• Knowledge of opto‑mechanical design, thermal analysis and STOP (Structural‑Thermal‑Optical‑Performance) analysis.
• Experience with Very High Resolution Earth observation payloads (strong asset).
