Officer, Defence Planning

About the role

The Defence Planning Officer supports the NATO Defence Planning Directorate in shaping Alliance defence policies and capability plans. Based in Brussels, the role involves extensive analysis of national defence plans, coordination of bi‑annual capability reviews, and frequent travel across NATO member states.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and edit comprehensive reports on Allied national defence plans, assessing them against NATO capability targets.
• Prepare speaking notes, briefing materials and policy documents for senior leadership and committee meetings.
• Coordinate the bi‑annual review of Allied capability delivery efforts.
• Build and maintain a network of national defence planning experts and represent the Directorate in meetings with national authorities.
• Monitor developments in the NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) and emerging technological trends affecting military capabilities.

Required profile

• University degree in a relevant field or attendance at a NATO/national joint staff college (OF‑3 level or higher).
• Minimum six years of experience in land, maritime, aerospace or joint forces, with solid knowledge of joint operations.
• Significant experience in defence planning or military capability development.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French (Advanced in one, Beginner in the other).
