Machine Vision / Mechanical Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated Machine Vision / Mechanical Engineer to join the Hilde Nelissen Lab at the VIB‑UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology in Ghent. You will work closely with scientists to develop a mobile 3D machine‑vision system for small plants and contribute to cutting‑edge plant phenotyping research.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and integrate a 3D camera system for acquiring plant seedlings in the visible spectrum.
• Develop computer‑vision software to extract phenotypic data such as shape, colour and landmarks.
• Advance the prototype into a user‑friendly, semi‑mobile instrument.
• Collaborate with researchers to define experimental setups and target traits.
• Participate in regular team meetings and adapt to evolving project needs.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics or related engineering field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Team‑player attitude with the ability to work independently.
• Enthusiasm for scientific research and willingness to learn basic plant biology.

Required skills

• Experience with machine‑vision systems.
• Design and integration of 3D camera hardware.
• Computer‑vision software development.
• Background in mechanical, electrical or robotics engineering.
• Interest or experience in image‑based plant phenotyping.
