Legal Counsel – Financial Services

About the role

The Legal Department of Bank Degroof Petercam is seeking a Financial Services Legal Counsel to join its dynamic team. Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will support the Bank’s Investment Banking, Private Banking and related units, ensuring compliance with banking, financial and corporate regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day legal advice to business units, including Investment Banking, Private Banking, Corporate Secretary and Compliance.
• Advise on group strategic and regulatory implementation projects from inception to rollout.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts, legal forms and template documents, focusing on clarity and risk mitigation.
• Manage claims and litigation files, coordinating with external counsel as needed.
• Monitor developments in banking, finance, civil and commercial law and organise internal training sessions.
• Support matters related to intellectual property, IT and outsourcing contracts, including data‑protection compliance.
• Collaborate with the three sub‑teams within the Legal Department to ensure consistent legal support across the Bank.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Law (Belgian).
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in an in‑house legal department of a financial institution or a law firm with banking and finance exposure.
• Demonstrated expertise in banking, financial and corporate law; knowledge of data‑protection legislation is a plus.
• Analytical thinker with strong business acumen and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical advice.
• Team‑player who can build effective relationships across legal and business functions.

Required skills

• Fluent French (written and spoken); good knowledge of Dutch and English.
