Lab Technician – Two-Photon Microscopy and Mouse Care

About the role

The VIB Center for Inflammation Research in Ghent is looking for a motivated lab technician to split their time between two teams: 80% in Dr. Katarzyna Jobin's laboratory and 20% in the VIB BioImaging Core. The work focuses on the biology and function of immune cells, including intravital imaging of the immune system with two-photon microscopy. The candidate will train to perform surgery on anesthetized mice and run two-photon experiments independently, and will also contribute to a range of animal experiments.

Key responsibilities

• Intravital imaging with two-photon microscopy: image acquisition, analysis, troubleshooting and keeping up with new technologies
• Animal work: infections (BSL2), injections, monitoring of mice, and helping maintain the mouse colony
• Assisting with animal ethics documentation and records using the Mausoleum software, and acting as the main contact with the animal house office and staff
• Wet-lab techniques such as PCR, qPCR, tissue digestion, cell isolation, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy and histology (training provided)
• Helping test, implement and optimise new experimental approaches in the Jobin lab, and contributing to the daily operation of the BioImaging Core

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in biomedical, biochemical, biotechnological techniques or animal care, or related field
• FELASA B/C certificate, or willingness to obtain it in a timely manner
• Fluent English, written and spoken
• Previous lab experience (placements during degree studies are sufficient); basic computer skills
• Desirable: experience with mice, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, PCR/qPCR and immunology
