Special Advisor – International Affairs

About the role

The Special Advisor (International Affairs) provides senior strategic, political and military counsel to the Office of the Strategic and International Affairs Advisor, supporting Allied Command Operations across Southern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea region.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver political‑military advice on NATO issues, focusing on Southern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
• Lead regional expertise on security, policy and operational matters in the East/South Mediterranean, North Africa, the Middle East and the Black Sea.
• Support NATO policy and planning initiatives, shaping command decisions with expert insight.
• Provide guidance on Integrated Air and Missile Defence and maritime security policies.
• Analyse European and global political‑military developments and assess implications for NATO operations.
• Advise on partnerships with regional organisations and coordinate with General Staffs.
• Represent the office in high‑level engagements with NATO HQ, national missions, governments and subordinate commands.
• Assist in crisis management, negotiations and the preparation of strategic assessments and courses of action.
• Draft senior‑level briefs, maintain diplomatic and military networks, and support senior visits and outreach.

Required profile

• Advanced expertise in political‑military and international affairs, with experience analysing complex geopolitical environments.
• Proven record in high‑level policy development and strategic planning for senior government or intergovernmental bodies.
• Demonstrated diplomatic engagement and stakeholder coordination, including representation and negotiation in international settings.
• University degree in political science, public administration, international relations or a related discipline, plus at least six years of relevant post‑graduate experience.
