Senior PKI Engineer – Certificate Authorities, HSMs and Smart Cards

About the role

The multinational defence organisation behind NATO’s secure communications is seeking a senior PKI Engineer to operate and evolve its public key infrastructure. You will be the go‑to expert for certificates, hardware security modules and smart‑card enrolment across a large international environment.

Key responsibilities

• Install, configure and maintain the organisation‑wide PKI, including virtualised platforms, networking and hardware components.
• Run the directory service and supporting web service, ensuring database health and backup/restore reliability.
• Own certificate status checking, time‑stamping and revocation processes.
• Deploy and manage the card management system for smart‑card enrolment and certificate issuance.
• Manage HSMs, perform firmware upgrades and analyse CA logs for anomalies.
• Provide second‑ and third‑line technical support and design new PKI components, SOPs and documentation.
• Investigate network faults, security incidents and performance problems, driving improvements.
• Support integration of security tooling, conduct testing, validation and acceptance.

Required profile

• At least five years in cyber security or a closely related field, delivering security architecture or operating demanding technical estates.
• Deep knowledge of modern networking and internet protocols, with hands‑on experience configuring routers and switches.
• Experience administering Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and VMware, including backup and restore.
• Proven ability to script in Python and PowerShell and automate with Ansible.
• Strong professional English with solid technical writing skills.
