Job description

About the role

Ghent University is looking for a research assistant (Job ID 30461) in the Department of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry (WE07) to join a translational research project on an innovative biomaterial-based medical device for advanced sinus surgery. The project is led by Prof. Thibaut Van Zele (Otorhinolaryngology, Ghent University Hospital) and Prof. Peter Dubruel (Polymer Chemistry & Biomaterials Group) and brings together polymer scientists, engineers and clinicians. The contract is of limited duration, for 1 year, starting on 1 December 2026 at the earliest, with wage scale WM1 to WM4 for a master's degree.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and optimise polymer formulations from ready-made building blocks, focusing on reproducibility, performance and processability.
  • Characterise physicochemical properties, including rheological behaviour, solidification kinetics and mechanical performance.
  • Incorporate active pharmaceutical ingredients and study their distribution and release profiles under physiologically relevant conditions.
  • Investigate the effect of different sterilisation methods on material properties.
  • Work with external engineering partners to evaluate and optimise prototype designs.
  • Carry out biocompatibility assessments according to ISO 10993 standards.
  • Help develop experimental protocols, technical documentation and plan upcoming in vivo validation studies.

Required profile

  • Master's degree in biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, biotechnology or a related field.
  • Strong written and spoken English; knowledge of Dutch is an asset.
  • A qualification in laboratory animal science, especially for preparing ethical applications, is a strong asset.
  • Interest in biomaterials, drug delivery systems and medical device development.
  • Excellent experimental and organisational skills, with careful laboratory documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate in an interdisciplinary team.

What we offer

  • Hands-on experience in translational research with scientists, clinicians and industrial partners.
  • Opportunity to apply for a four-year FWO PhD fellowship after the project.
  • University-wide benefits such as training, 36 days of holiday leave per year, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.

Applications are made online through the university's e-recruitment system by 06/11/2026, with CV, academic transcript, cover letter and diploma (with translation if needed).
