Professor of Microfluidics and Microreactor Development

About the role

The Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering Sciences at VUB seeks a part‑time professor to lead education and research in experimental microfluidics and microreactor design. The role combines teaching, supervision of graduate students, and development of cutting‑edge microfluidic applications.

Key responsibilities

• Co‑teach the 6 ECTS Microfluidics course (variants for Sustainable Chemistry and Biotechnology) and deliver roughly half of the lectures.
• Supervise master’s and PhD theses and organise workshops and training courses within the Flanders Chips Competence Center.
• Develop microfluidic applications using silicon, glass and polymer chips for analytical and preparative separations and suspension handling.
• Design fabrication process flows, advanced experimental setups and perform numerical multiphysics simulations with COMSOL.
• Contribute to the µFlow Team, write research proposals (EU, FWO, Innoviris, etc.) and coordinate funded interdisciplinary projects.

Required profile

• PhD in Sciences or (Bio‑)Engineering and at least four years of post‑doctoral experience.
• Current part‑time post‑doctoral position at VUB in microfluidics/microreactors, to continue for the next three years.
• Strong publication record in high‑impact (Q1, Web of Science) journals and experience managing large interdisciplinary projects.
• Excellent communication, networking and coaching abilities for students, researchers and industry partners.

Required skills

• Expertise in experimental microfluidics and chip fabrication (silicon, glass, polymers).
• Proficiency with COMSOL Multiphysics for multiphysics simulations.
• Competence in CAD software for designing microfluidic devices and experimental setups.
• Experience writing and managing scientific project proposals (EU‑funded, national grants).
