Optics Engineer – Illumination Systems

About the role

Barco’s Immersive Experiences business unit is looking for an Optics Engineer to design and optimise illumination systems for 1‑DLP projector platforms. You will work in an international R&D team, turning cutting‑edge projection and image‑processing technologies into unforgettable experiences for live events, museums, theme parks and simulators.

Key responsibilities

• Design, simulate and validate illumination optics from light source to DMD using Zemax OpticStudio.
• Define optical architectures, specify projection lens requirements and perform trade‑offs on brightness, uniformity, contrast and étendue.
• Apply colour‑science principles to meet target colour and brightness stability.
• Measure and validate colour, luminance and uniformity with spectrometers and colourimeters.
• Develop analysis tools and process data using Python or similar scientific languages.
• Collaborate with key optical suppliers on requirement definition, technical reviews and prototype validation.
• Support prototype builds, optical alignment and system‑level testing alongside production engineers.
• Document designs, results and decisions; provide ongoing maintenance and improvement for existing products.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Photonics or a related field.
• 2–5 years of engineering experience in an optical design environment.
• Strong knowledge of illumination optics and solid‑state light sources (laser, LED, phosphor).

Required skills

• Zemax OpticStudio (Ansys Zemax).
• Python (or other scientific programming language) for data analysis.
• Use of spectrometers and colourimeters for optical measurement.
• Experience with DLP technology and DMD‑based projector systems.
