Officer, Current Operations Section

About the role

The Operations Division of NATO’s International Staff seeks an experienced officer to join the Current Operations Section in Brussels. The incumbent will advise senior leadership, develop policy, and ensure effective operational responses to crises affecting the Alliance.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse security and political developments, draft policy documents and monitor implementation.
• Prepare briefing material, speaking notes and point papers for senior NATO officials, including the Secretary‑General.
• Lead or participate in internal task forces and multilateral diplomatic discussions.
• Provide expert advice on NATO operations, missions and activities, and assess their effectiveness.
• Deputise for the Head of Section as required and support deployments to non‑permissive environments.

Required profile

• University degree in political science, international relations or a related field.
• Minimum five years of relevant experience, including multilateral diplomacy and crisis management.
• Advanced proficiency (Level V) in one NATO official language (English or French) and beginner level (Level I) in the other.
• Demonstrated flexibility, teamwork and ability to work under tight deadlines.

Required skills

• Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) certification (or willingness to obtain).
• Medical fitness for deployment in hostile areas.
