Legal Counsel – Global Office

About the role

The Legal Counsel supports GS1 AISBL and the GS1 Global Office by delivering high‑quality legal advice on corporate governance, membership matters, contracts, public policy, and emerging topics such as AI governance. The role ensures the smooth operation of GS1’s global governance framework and assists Member Organisations worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on Belgian corporate law and GS1 AISBL corporate matters.
• Interpret and implement Internal Regulations.
• Lead legal aspects of new Member Organisation admissions, including strategic considerations.
• Respond to legal and governance queries from Member Organisations.
• Support GS1 Global Office teams on legal and regulatory issues.
• Oversee contracts workstream, standardisation, and automation.
• Manage technology‑related topics, AI governance, and AI‑related applications.
• Advise on unauthorised use of the GS1 system, system integrity, and Intellectual Property matters.
• Develop FAQs, guidance, and training materials for the community.
• Provide induction and training to GS1 Global Office staff and Membership Organisations.
• Coordinate legal developments and updates.

Required profile

• Strong legal professional with sound judgment and a proactive mindset.
• Experience working in a federated, governance‑heavy global organisation.
• Excellent communicator who can translate complex legal concepts for non‑lawyers.
• Collaborative across departments, functions, and cultures.
• Responsive trusted advisor able to manage competing priorities.
• Technologically curious and digitally savvy, interested in responsible technology use.
• Professional, collegial, and approachable.
