Lab Technician - Next Generation Sequencing

About the role

VIB Nucleomics Core, part of VIB Technologies, provides access to next-generation sequencing technologies and supports the 1900 researchers at VIB. It is looking for a motivated lab technician to join its team of lab technicians and bioinformaticians in Leuven. The position is full-time with an open-ended contract.

Key responsibilities

• Independently carry out routine workflows such as DNA/RNA quality control, library preparation and setting up sequencing runs on NGS instruments
• Operate robotic devices such as automated liquid dispensers and robotic arms
• Summarise analyses, interpret data and draw conclusions
• Follow general lab policies, SOPs and other guidelines
• Improve techniques and workflows in consultation with the team
• Collaborate with colleagues to ensure smooth project execution and high-quality results
• Prepare and write technical reports recording data and results
• Stay up to date with emerging technologies in next-generation sequencing, genomics and transcriptomics
• On the longer term, help with method development together with other lab technicians

Required profile

• Degree in Biotechnological, Biomedical or Biological Sciences (Bachelor/Engineer) or equivalent by training or experience
• Both experienced and junior candidates are considered
• Fluent English and comfort in an international setting
• Meticulous, proactive and results-oriented, able to work independently in an organised way
• Flexible, service-oriented and able to interact with colleagues and customers

Required skills

• Practical knowledge of general molecular biology and basic wet-lab techniques
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Experience with DNA/RNA quality control, NGS library preparation and/or laboratory automation is a strong plus but not required
