Lab Manager (Structural Biology Research)

About the role

The Brunner Lab at the VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology studies the structure and function of membrane proteins such as lipid transporters, ion channels and synaptic vesicle transporters, using cryo-electron microscopy combined with biochemical, biophysical and cell biological methods. It is looking for an enthusiastic, highly organized Lab Manager to support the day-to-day operation of the lab, combining lab management with hands-on research technician support and working closely with students and postdoctoral scientists.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and organize lab operations and logistics
• Order and keep track of lab supplies, and prepare and maintain common lab reagents
• Maintain, service and troubleshoot lab equipment
• Onboard and train new lab members on safety procedures and equipment
• Provide technical support to researchers across multiple projects
• Help implement new lab workflows, protocols and best practices
• Perform maintenance of mammalian cell cultures (HEK cells) when needed
• Take part in scientific projects where appropriate, depending on experience and interest

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Industrial Engineering or a related life sciences discipline
• Strong organizational and planning skills with excellent attention to detail
• Proactive, service-minded and self-motivated attitude
• Experience with lab equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
• Hands-on experience with molecular biology and protein biochemistry
• Good command of spoken and written English
• Desirable: previous lab management, research support or research technician experience, basic mammalian cell culture experience, and interest in structural biology or biophysical techniques
