Head of Internal Audit – ACO

About the role

The Head of Internal Audit for the Allied Command Operations (ACO) will provide strategic leadership for the internal audit branch, ensuring independent assurance across NATO’s operational command structure. Reporting directly to senior NATO leadership, you will shape audit policy, oversee complex audit programmes and drive accountability, transparency and effectiveness.

Key responsibilities

• Set vision, strategic direction and overall accountability for the ACO Internal Audit Branch.
• Deliver independent, evidence‑based audit opinions and written reports to SACEUR, the Chief of Staff and the Audit Advisory Panel.
• Design, risk‑assess and obtain approval for the annual internal audit programme.
• Direct financial, compliance, risk, performance and IT systems audits in both headquarters and operational theatres.
• Manage ad‑hoc investigations and special audit requests from senior commanders and financial controllers.
• Develop and maintain internal audit policies, strategies and operational manuals.
• Build and maintain strategic relationships with senior NATO leaders and external audit bodies.
• Monitor follow‑up on audit findings to ensure corrective actions are implemented with clear ownership.
• Oversee continuous training and professional development for audit staff.
• Translate complex audit data into clear, actionable advice for senior decision‑makers.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading audit teams and delivering audit programmes in large, complex organisations.
• Experience with recognised Enterprise Risk Management methodologies and internal control frameworks.
• Professional auditor certification from a recognised internal auditing body, maintained through continuous professional development.
• Membership in a recognised professional auditing or accounting institution.
• University degree in accounting, finance, management, business administration or a related field.
