English Teaching and Research Assistant

About the role

The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication at Ghent University seeks an Assistant English to support academic research and teaching activities. The position combines doctoral research with assistance in English‑language courses across several bachelor and master programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct academic research (minimum 50% of time) towards a doctoral dissertation, aligned with department research groups.
• Assist in teaching English proficiency and English for specific purposes courses in bachelor and master programmes.
• Support internal and external departmental services.
• Submit a doctoral fellowship application to the Research Foundation Flanders during the first term, if eligibility criteria are met.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Translation, Interpreting, Multilingual Communication, Linguistics or related field, with English as a studied language.
• Eligibility to start the appointment with the required degree; foreign degrees require a NARIC equivalence certificate.
• Interest in academic or project‑based research and services.
• Excellent teaching and communication abilities.
• Commitment to Ghent University’s code of ethics.

Required skills

• C2 level proficiency in English (CEFR).
• Knowledge of Dutch at C1/C2 level (considered an asset).
