Head of Accounting

About the role

The Office of Financial Control seeks a senior leader to head the Accounting Service for NATO International Staff. The incumbent will ensure the financial integrity of the Civil Budget and other NATO budgets, providing strategic and operational oversight.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and coordinate multiple accounting and finance initiatives, guaranteeing compliance with regulatory standards and timely delivery.
• Develop and maintain advanced IPSAS expertise across the finance function, aligning policies and procedures with evolving public‑sector reporting requirements.
• Lead, coach and grow a high‑performing accounting team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.
• Provide strategic financial oversight for system enhancements and act as deputy for the Financial Controller or Branch Head when required.

Required profile

• University degree in economics, accounting, finance, public administration or a related field.
• Professional accounting certification from a recognised chartered institute.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in an international organization, government or commercial accounting, including team leadership.
• Advanced proficiency (Level V) in one NATO official language and Upper‑Intermediate (Level IV) in the other.

Required skills

• Proficiency with sophisticated ERP systems such as Oracle e‑Business Suite.
• Experience using SAP for financial processes.
• Strong knowledge of IPSAS and IFRS accounting standards.
